FORT MILL, SC ~
Doris K. Adams, 95, of Poughkeepsie, NY, passed away at her home in South Carolina on January 15th, 2021. Originally from Dansville, NY, Doris was the daughter of Dr. Simon and Edith King and the widow of Poughkeepsie businessman, Ralph R. Adams, of Adams Fairacre Farms, whom she met attending Cornell University. Doris and Ralph were married on November 20th, 1948 and celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary before Ralph's passing in 2014. Doris majored in the study of languages at Cornell and went on to teach Spanish at the high school level. After raising four children, and returning to school to earn her Master's Degree from Fordham University, Doris worked as a social worker in the field of mental health, opening her own practice. Doris had an amazing enthusiasm for life and held many interests. She loved to travel and enjoyed trips abroad with her husband Ralph. Her hobbies included skiing and photography. A member of both The Poughkeepsie and The Orange and Dutchess Garden Clubs, Doris was an avid gardener and volunteered as a "weeder" and in the restoration of the Beatrix Farrand Garden at Bellefield. During the 70s, Doris was part of a musical trio called The Merry Wives, performing folk music throughout the Hudson Valley. She was a member of both The Poughkeepsie IBM Chorus and The Carolina Lakes Choral Society. She enjoyed playing tennis with Ralph and friends at The Poughkeepsie Tennis Club. Doris never lost her love of learning, joining The Fortnightly Club, where she researched and presented papers well into her nineties. The many life-long friends Doris made through these various clubs meant the world to her.
