Obituary

CHARLOTTE, NC – David B. Newman was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 6, 1940, to parents, Yvonne and Nathan Newman.  He attended Erasmus Hall High School, and graduated from New York University in 1962, where he majored in Economics.  He subsequently completed his law degree at Cornell Law School, and married Margot Newman, his college sweetheart, in Ithaca, NY, prior to graduation.  The couple settled in Scarsdale, NY where they raised their two daughters, Barbara and Stephanie.

David started his law career at Proskauer Rose but was subsequently recruited to work in a prestigious business group developing tax products at Bankers Trust, now Deutsche Bank.  David's expertise was in International Tax law, which resulted in extensive travel to Europe and Asia facilitating business deals.  He enjoyed a lengthy career as Managing Director at the Bank, which spanned more than 25 years, reporting to his good friend and mentor, Jim O'Brien.  In 1999, David was recruited by Bank of America in Charlotte to work in the same capacity.  Following his retirement from the bank, he worked directly under the Chief Counsel for the International tax group of the Treasury Department and later operated his own tax controversy business.

David authored several books on various aspects of corporate taxation over the years and has written numerous scholarly articles as well. He also earned a highly coveted LLM in taxation from NYU, and was sponsored by Bankers Trust in his pursuit of a Harvard MBA while on sabbatical.

Following Margot's death in 1993, David met and married his wife, Penny, in 1998.  David had a generous and philanthropic spirit, donating over the years to such causes as the education of young Chinese children in rural provinces; HIV/AIDS research: American Wheelchair Mission, and the ASPCA.  He loved studying animal behavior in the wilds of Yellowstone National Park, and his wife, Penny, taught him how to horseback ride, which he developed a great passion for.  The couple spent many summers and autumns in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Montana hiking, rafting, horseback riding, and appreciating the wilderness.

David was known among friends for his kindness and dry sense of humor, as well as for his love and devotion to caring for his three Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Charlotte, Savannah, and Coco.  He loved helping others with their tax and business problems, and his work was always his biggest passion.

David had a peaceful passing, following complications from a stroke.  He is survived by his wife, Penny; his daughters, Barbara and Stephanie; and his sister, Nancy Fein.  Private memorial services will be held for family and friends in New York and Charlotte, NC.
