Catherine Phillips Hudson, age 98, went home to meet her Savior on Monday morning, October 26, 2026. She was the daughter of the late John Clyde Phillips, Sr and Coree Hunter Phillips. Catherine grew up and lived most of her life in Lancaster, SC before moving to Conway, SC to be near her daughter and grandchildren. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt who surrounded herself with photos of the family she loved.

Mrs. Hudson worked at the Springs Industries Lancaster Plant where she worked her way to a supervisor position, and many Lancaster residents remember her as the outgoing receptionist at the Carriage Inn Restaurant or the friendly cashier at the HerCheck Convenience Store on Meeting Street. If she didn’t know you when she first spoke to you, she would by the end of the conversation, and you would go back just so you could talk with her again. That was just her personality!

Her green thumb kept the yard of her little home on Meeting Street bright and colorful. She protected that little blue spruce tree with a passion until it got large enough to fend for itself, and many family members inherited bulbs from her garden when she moved to Conway. You could always tell if she was home if you could see her “special couch” through the storm door. She loved nature and always kept her door open if she was at home.

Catherine was a strong, independent woman who never left the house without looking like she had spent hours getting ready. Truth be known, she probably had. But she always took pride in her appearance and stood out as a “lady who had it together”. She loved the Lord and was an active member of the University Baptist Church for many years where she worked with the children and youth. And when she could no longer safely drive to get to church services, she still “went to church” right in her own living room every Sunday morning where she watched two different pastors on television.

Mrs. Hudson is survived by her daughter, Vickie Stokes; three grandsons – Bryant Stokes (Julie), Richard Stokes (Jaimie), and Clint Stokes (Autumn); ten great grandchildren – Hunter, Dawson, Hudson, Annabel, Hayden, Daylon, Emily, Clairissa, Hannah, and Allina; three sisters – Jeanette Hunter, Joanne Hunter, and Yvonne Bragg (Clint); sister-in-law – Elsie Phillips; and many nieces/nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers – Talmadge Phillips, Clyde “Bill” Phillips Jr, Ralph Phillips, and Wilson “Punk” Phillips; and two sisters – Dallas Faulkenberry and Ruth Sowell.

The family will receive friends Saturday, October 31st Noon-1:00PM at Burgess Funeral Home followed immediately by a celebration of life in the chapel and burial at Lancaster Memorial Park.
