LANCASTER, SC – Mr. Burke “Butch” Gilbert Duncan, Jr., age 86, passed away on October 28, 2026. He was born in Lancaster, SC on September 30, 1940 to the late Burke Gilbert Duncan, Sr. and the late Iva Steele Duncan and was the loving and devoted husband of the late Betty Moore Duncan.

Butch was a truly remarkable man whose gentle spirit, kind heart, and genuine love for others touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a man who was deeply loved by his family, friends, church family, and community. His warmth, kindness, and unwavering love for those around him made him a special person, and his memory will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved him.

Butch was a faithful member of Hopewell Methodist Church, where he found great joy in attending services, fellowshipping with his church family, and lending a helping hand whenever needed. He loved doing things for his church, but there was one contribution that was especially dear to him—making the slaw for the church’s barbecue event. The slaw was his thing, and it became a special part of who he was and the legacy he leaves behind. It was one of the many ways he shared his love with others and served his church family with a willing heart.

Above all else, Butch treasured his family. He was the very best daddy, Pawpaw, brother, uncle, and friend anyone could ask for. There was simply no better daddy or Pawpaw than Mr. Butch. His love for his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren knew no bounds. He absolutely adored his grandchildren and took immense pride in each of them and all they accomplished. Whether celebrating their successes, encouraging them along the way, or simply enjoying the everyday moments together, his grandchildren were a tremendous source of joy in his life. He loved spending time with them and taking care of them, and they knew they were deeply loved by their Pawpaw. The memories he created with them will remain treasured gifts that they will carry in their hearts forever.

Butch also found happiness in life’s simple pleasures and the friendships that meant so much to him. He enjoyed starting his mornings with breakfast at Dixie Food Mart, where he could sit down, enjoy a good meal, and spend time with his friends. Those familiar faces, conversations, and shared moments were an important part of his daily life. He especially cherished the friendship he shared with his best friend, Emerson Couch. The two were buddies in every sense of the word, and their friendship was a special part of Butch’s life.

Butch was also a proud and devoted member of Camp Creek Masonic Lodge, where he held membership for more than 60 years. His longstanding commitment reflected the values of fellowship, service, and brotherhood that he carried throughout his life.

Butch’s life was a beautiful example of what it means to love others well. He was gentle, dependable, generous with his time, and always willing to do for others. He did not have to do anything extraordinary to make a difference; he made a difference simply by being himself. Through his love for his family, his faithfulness to his church, his dedication to his Masonic brothers, and the friendships he nurtured, he built a legacy that will continue to live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

Though his absence will be deeply felt, the love Butch gave so freely will never be forgotten. His family will forever treasure the lessons he taught, the laughter he shared, the traditions he created, and the countless ways he showed them how much they mattered. His grandchildren will always have the love of their Pawpaw to carry with them, and his family and friends will forever hold close the memories of a man who made life sweeter simply by being in it.

Butch was loved beyond measure, and he will be missed more than words can express. His legacy of faith, family, friendship, and love will live on for generations to come. Though his earthly journey has ended, the impact of his life remains, and he will forever hold a special place in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Butch is survived by son, Rusty Duncan (Heather); his three grandchildren, Bryce Duncan, Blake Duncan, and Meredith Duncan; five siblings, Mack Duncan (Hattie), Betty Sims, Diane Sistare, Richard Duncan, and Debbie Snipes (Ken); his sister-in-law, Ann Duncan; his brother-in-law, Paul Walters; and many special extended family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Duncan; their son, Chadwick Moore Duncan; his parents, Burke and Iva Duncan; four siblings, Bobbie Walters, Sam Duncan (Beverly), Don Duncan, and Lum Duncan; and his two brothers-in-laws, Wayne Sims, and Robert Sistare.

The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Butch will be held at 11:00am on Monday, November 2, 2026, at Hopewell Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Danny Queen and Rev. Glenn Ribelin. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, Sunday, November 1, 2026 at Burgess Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Hopewell Methodist Church, 3734 Heyward Hough Rd., Lancaster, SC 29720.
