LANCASTER, SC ~ Mrs. Billie Hinson Steele, 88, passed away Saturday, August 3, 2019.  She was born May 14, 1931 in Lancaster, a daughter of the late William Vannie Hinson and Reath Harris Hinson and was the wife of the late Harold Richard Steele, Sr. Mrs. Steele retired from the Lancaster County School District after 28 years of service.  She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and received her master's degree from Winthrop University.  She was an avid reader and loved the mountains.  Her favorite places in South Carolina were Table Rock and Pretty Place in Easley, but she also loved Bonclarken in Flat Rock.  She served in Scouting for 50 plus years and volunteered at The Little School House at Andrew Jackson State Park.  She was a devoted member of Unity A.R.P. Church teaching Sunday School and served as the congregational secretary for many years.

Mrs. Steele is survived by her children, Jane Steele Lucas, Emily S. Stacks (Mike Magee) and Susan S. Jenkins all of Lancaster; Harold Richard "Rick" Steele, Jr. (Becky) of Lancaster and David Mark Steele (Julie) of Waldorf, MD; 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Steele was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 63 years, Harold Richard Steele, Sr.; three grandchildren, Kelly L. Laney, Kerry A. Lucas and Jacob M. Steele; two brothers, Bruce Hinson and Jerry Hinson, Sr.; and a sister, Doris Hinson.

The Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Mrs. Steele will be 11:00am, Monday, August 5, 2019 at Unity A.R.P. Church by Rev. Charles Hammond and Dr. Guy Smith.

The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall and suggest in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Unity A.R.P. Church General Fund, 3495 Unity Church Road, Lancaster, SC  29720.
