Obituary

LANCASTER, SC:::::::::: Mr. Billy Carson "Bill" Melton, age 78, died Friday, June 4, 2010 at Springs Memorial Hospital. He was born June 9, 1931 in Monroe, NC, the son of the late Olin Wayne Melton and Reecie Griffin Melton and was the husband of Lynn Winchester Melton. Mr. Melton was a graduate of Kings Business College and retired from Springs Industries - Transportation Department with 43 years of service. He was named Lancaster Junior Chamber of Commerce Young Man of the Year in 1965 and served as Chairman of the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce Charlie Duke Day in 1972. He served on the Board of Directors for the Children's Home of Lancaster from 1976 - 1977, was past Post Commander of the American Legion Post 31 from 1978-1979, and served on Lancaster City Council 1979 - 1982 and again in 1986 - 1990. He also served as President of the Carolina Traffic and Transportation Club in 1985, served as President of the Southern Transportation League 1988-1989, the Lancaster County Library Board and the Lancaster County Clemson Extension Advisory Board. Mr. Melton was an active member of First United Methodist Church and served our great country in the United States Army from 1952 - 1954.Mr. Melton is survived by his wife, Lynn Winchester Melton of the home; two daughters, Vicki M. Williams and her husband Frank of Simpsonville, SC and Susan M. Culp and her husband Aaron of Johns Island, SC; a brother, O. Max Melton of Monroe, NC; three sisters, Betty M. McWhorter and Carol M. Tyson of Monroe and Patsy M. Jones of Sunset Beach, NC; and three grandchildren, Andrew Williams, Nicholas Williams and Griffin Culp.The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mr. Melton will be 2:00 pm, Monday, June 7, 2010 at First United Methodist Church by Rev. Dan Batson with entombment to follow at Lancaster Memorial Park Mausoleum. The Family of Mr. Melton will receive friends from 4:00 - 6:00 pm Sunday afternoon, June 6, 2010 at Hartley Funeral Home and suggest memorial contributions be made to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 608, Lancaster, SC 29721 or the American Cancer Society, Lancaster County Relay for Life, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210
