LAURINBURG, NC:::::::: Mrs. Bertie Mayes Ferguson, age 94, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on the morning of December 17, 2012 at Scotia Village in Laurinburg, NC. Bertie was the daughter of Edward and Dixie Mayes and was born in Camak, Georgia on September 8, 1918. A devoted wife and mother, Bertie was married to the late Floyd Andri Ferguson for 46 years and is survived by two daughters, Kathy Hegler (Julian) of Murrells Inlet, S. C., and Bonnie Winburn (Michael) of Bennettsville, South Carolina.
A Christian friend to all who knew her, Bertie was a member of The First Baptist Church of Lancaster, S. C. for over 66 years. She was the office manager for Pilot Life Insurance Company for over 25 years, an advocate and officer of the Lancaster Mental Health Association, secretary of the local volunteer fire department and for years a board member of the Lancaster United Way.
"Miss Bertie" loved antiques, music, was an accomplished seamstress, enjoyed intricate needlework, and a " chef " beyond compare; all while serving the little ones at First Baptist as their Sunday School teacher for over 30 years.
Mrs. Ferguson was predeceased by siblings, Ethel M. Harper, Edward Mayes, Gladys M. Davis, Howard Mayes, Marion Mayes, Carwee M. Hardy, and Anise M. Bell.
"Miss Bertie" is survived by four grandchildren: Kelly Hegler Walker of Winston-Salem, N.C., Julian Hegler, Jr. (Teresa) of Raleigh, N.C., Andrew Winburn (Heather) of Greenville, S. C. and Edward Scott Winburn (Lara) of Columbia, S. C.
Mrs. Ferguson is also survived by seven great-grandchildren: Jessica Younguist, Colby Hegler, Henry Hegler, Logan Hegler, Matthew Walker, Nicholas Walker, and Frances Mayes Winburn. One sister also survives, Mrs. Lillian Mayes Dean of Rockmart, Georgia.
The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 19 in the sanctuary of The First Baptist Church, Lancaster, SC with funeral services to follow at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to First Baptist Church of Lancaster or the Alzheimers Association
