Mrs. Bernice Banks Mackey, age 97, died Tuesday, February 23, 2016. She was born August 29, 1918 in Marshall, NC, a daughter of the late Lewis Elbert Banks and Virgie Rhea Banks. Mrs. Mackey was married first to the late H. Carmel DeWeese of Asheville, NC and later to the late Wilburn M. Mackey of Lancaster, SC. She retired from Sears. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, sewing and cooking. She was an active member of First Baptist Church and served in many capacities. She was also a member of Eastern Star.

Mrs. Mackey is survived by a daughter, Elaine DeWeese McWaters of Lancaster; three grandsons, Jim McWaters and his wife, Shannon of Columbia, SC, Brian McWaters of Lancaster and Scott McWaters and his wife, Carrie of Tuscaloosa, AL; five great grandchildren, Brandon, Drew, Sarah, DeLaney and Millie McWaters; four sisters, Margie Penley of Asheville,NC, Alice Bowlin of Leicester, NC, Carol Young of Raleigh, NC, and Judy Herring and her husband, David of Asheville, NC; two brothers, Lewis Glenn Brother Banks and his wife, Doris of Virginia and King Banks of Woodfin, NC.

Mrs. Mackey was preceded in death by a son in law, James C. Jimmy McWaters; two brothers, Bob Banks and Lawrence Banks; and four sisters, Louise Huey, Theo Wise, Louella Penley and Marietta Cogburn.

Mrs. Mackeys family would like to extend a special thank you to her caregivers, Shannon Blanks and Susie Callahan.

The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mrs. Mackey will be 2:30 pm, Saturday, February 27, 2016 at First Baptist Church by Rev. Randy Hatcher and Rev. Michael Anderson. Entombment will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:30 - 2:30 pm, Saturday in the First Baptist Church Sanctuary and suggest memorial contributions be made to Hospice of South Carolina, 311-B North Main Street, Suite A, Lancaster, SC 29720.
