Obituary

LANCASTER, SC::::::::::::::::Benjamin Alexander Brown, Jr., 92, a long-time resident of Lancaster, South Carolina, passed away at Morningside on November 19, 2016, surrounded by his family. Mr. Brown was born February 21, 1924, in Converse, South Carolina, to Louise and Ben Brown. During World War II and his sophomore year at Wofford College, Mr. Brown joined the Army and was selected for the ASTP, an Army education division, where he attended Boston College. He then served in the 78th Division, 311th infantry regiment of the Cannon Company during World War II. Mr. Brown fought in three major campaigns during the war: The Battle of the Bulge; the Rhineland, which included establishing a bridgehead at Remagen; and the Central Europe Campaign, in which Germany surrendered. After the war, Mr. Brown graduated from Wofford College. He then married the most beautiful girl he had ever seen, and was a devoted husband to Frances Hughes Brown, and a beloved father to his daughters, Deborah Nipe and Bonnie Alexander. A CPA, Mr. Brown primarily spent his career working for Springs Industries, serving as the director of the tax department for 25 years. Mr. Brown also served on the board of directors for Founders Federal Credit Union. After retirement, Mr. Brown enjoyed designing and building furniture, volunteering as an accountant for his daughters business, reading, and spending time with family. Mr. Brown was known for the kindness, patience, care, and attention to detail he put into all things. A member of First Baptist Church in Lancaster, Mr. Brown had a strong faith in Christ and served as a deacon and long-time Sunday School teacher.

Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his wife Frances, and daughter, Bonnie Alexander. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Nipe, his grandchildren, Jennifer Nipe Anderssen (David); John Nipe (Amy); Susan Alexander Roberson (Keith); Patrick Alexander and Jordan Alexander; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Ronnie Brown, and his wife, Joanne, of Spartanburg, and their family.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2016, at 11:30 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with Reverend Randy Hatcher officiating.
