LANCASTER, SC – Mrs. Barbara Blackwell Horton Coalwell, 85, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2026, at home surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Coalwell was born in Lancaster, South Carolina, on March 31, 1941, to the late Lewis Clarence Blackwell and Edith Self Stogner Hinson, and was the wife of Lyle K. Coalwell.
Mrs. Coalwell was a long-time and active member of Zamar Church, serving in various capacities over the years. She was the last surviving charter member of Zamar Church, formerly known as Christian Assembly Worship Center. She bore witness of her faith when family and others observed her reading her bible, praying for others, and teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ for many years as Sunday School teacher.
A selfless servant of Jesus Christ and a woman of uncommon faith, Mrs. Coalwell has passed down a legacy of courage and faith that will continue to inspire others for generations to come.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Coalwell was predeceased by her husband, Charles Wayne Horton; her sisters, Annie Ruth Blackwell Mungo Wheeler and Lucille Stogner; and her brother, James Norwood Stogner.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Coalwell is survived by her three children, Pamela Horton Stevenson (Randy) of Holden Beach, NC, Susan Horton Conner (Ron) of Glen Allen, VA, and Charles Wayne Horton, Jr. (Carla) of Lancaster, SC.
Mrs. Coalwell is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Charles Joseph Horton of Lancaster, SC, Christopher Mitchell Horton of Lancaster, SC, Michael Grant Lindsay of Lancaster, SC, Megan Lindsay Altman (Matthew) of Lancaster, SC, Matthew Charles Lindsay (Kayla) of Blue Ridge, VA, Carly Horton Walker (Scottie) of Lancaster, SC, Stephanie Amanda Conner of Charlottesville, VA, and Samantha Brooke Conner of Fairfax, VA.
Mrs. Coalwell is also survived by four great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild, and her beloved nieces.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, from 10:00 am – 11:00 am at Zamar Church. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Zamar Church, officiated by Rev. Marvin K. Tennant, III, on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.
