LANCASTER, SC ~ Barbara Basham, 79, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2026, in Lancaster, South Carolina, surrounded by her family after a brief and unexpected battle with ovarian cancer.

Barbara was born on February 25, 1947, in Red Rock, Ontario, Canada, to Madeline and Douglas Ford. She later attended the Academy of Our Lady of Grace in Colebrook, New Hampshire. On December 10, 1965, she married William George “Bill” Basham, beginning a life together that would take them to many places and create a lifetime of memories.

Barbara was the mother of two daughters, Renée Ellison and Cynthia Basham, and her family was at the center of her life. She was also a beloved grandmother to Erika Ellison.

Barbara was always up for an adventure. She embraced the opportunity to raise her girls in the Last Frontier of Alaska, taking full advantage of life there—from fishing and hunting to skiing—and forming friendships that would last a lifetime. Wherever life took her, Barbara made a home, became part of the community and built relationships that endured across both years and miles.

Barbara shared a love of sailing and travel with her daughters. Together they enjoyed many adventures on the water and numerous trips throughout the Caribbean and Europe. Whether it was setting out for somewhere new or simply saying yes to a new experience, Barbara approached life with curiosity and a willingness to make the most of it.

In Kentucky, her love of gardening led to many years of service with the Cardinal Council of Garden Clubs of Kentucky, including the Warren East Garden Club. She generously shared her time and talents and especially enjoyed photography, devoting countless hours to photographing garden club shows and helping make them a success.

Most recently, Barbara moved to South Carolina to be closer to Cindy, beginning what she expected would be a new chapter close to family.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William George “Bill” Basham, and her brother, Douglas Ford. She is survived by her daughters, Renée Ellison and her husband, Rick, and Cynthia Basham; her granddaughter, Erika Ellison; her brother, Richard Ford and his wife, Louise; her niece, Donna Nasso; her nephew, Douglas Ford; and many extended family members and dear friends.

Her cancer diagnosis in late June came as a shock to Barbara and everyone who loved her. Through it all, her determination and spirit remained strong. In her final days, she was surrounded by family and dear friends, including Gay Hartman and Jane Wernsing, who traveled to be with her and whose presence and support meant so much to Barbara and her family.

Barbara will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, her independence and determination, and her willingness to embrace whatever came next. Perhaps most of all, she will be remembered for the relationships she built along the way. Her friendships stretched across countries, states and decades, and she remained deeply connected to people from many different chapters of her life.

Her family finds great comfort in believing that she and Bill are together again.

A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held in Bowling Green, Kentucky, at a later date. Her ashes will ultimately be placed with Bill at Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Teal Butterfly Ovarian Cancer Awareness, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Charlotte, North Carolina.
