Avis Hanson Flynn Wallace, 87, of Lancaster, SC, passed away on Wednesday, August 20, 2014.
Avis was born October 22, 1926 in Whittier, NC, to parents Chriss Coleman Hanson, Sr. and Ruth Brubaker Hanson. She attended Western Carolina University and was employed as a secretary to the management with Springs Industries in Lancaster, SC. In 1948, she married Gene Shute Flynn while Gene was attending Clemson University. The couple started their life together in the Riverside community of Lancaster County, SC, and subsequently lived in the Springs communities of Lancaster, SC; Fort Mill, SC; Chester, SC; and later in Salisbury, NC.
Avis was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed her children's many activities and chaperoned numerous field trips and beach outings and attended many football games, basketball games, and swim meets as her children grew up. Avis made friends easily and gathered a wide social circle through her many activities, including golf, book clubs, garden clubs, bridge clubs, walking clubs, and church. Avis especially enjoyed her travels around the world.
Avis was preceded in death by her husband of over 41 years, Gene Shute Flynn; and by her second husband of 10 years, Frank Wallace. She is survived by her brother, C.C. Hanson, Jr. (Joan) of Lancaster, SC; children, Chriss Flynn, Sr. (Karen) of Lancaster, SC; Carol Flynn Hall (Bill) of Durham, NC; and Julie Flynn Broome (Bobby) of Charlotte, NC; step-children Harrison Wallace (Billie) and Claudia Wallace; and her grandchildren, Chriss Flynn, Jr., Betsy McLaughlin, Alex Hall, Leslie Hall, Kathryn Broome and Joanna Broome; and 5 great-grandchildren.
A service will be held Saturday, September 6, 2014, at 2:00 PM at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 5908 Tabernacle Road, Lancaster, SC. The family will receive friends in the church Social Hall immediately following the service. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Building Fund at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 5908 Tabernacle Rd., Lancaster, SC 29720.
