LANCASTER, SC ~ Ann M. Hurley, 90, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2025. Ann was born on January 30, 1935, in Troy, NC to Maxine K. and John Lloyd Maness, Sr. She graduated Troy High School in 1953 where she was known as "The Queen of the Athletic World,". Ann earned a degree in Nursing from Cabarrus Memorial Hospital Nursing School in 1956 and worked as a registered nurse for over 50 years. She retired from the Lancaster County Health Department, where she worked as a home health nurse, in 2000.
Ann was happily married to Noel Hurley for 58 years, making their home in the Douglas Community. She is survived by her three children: Janet Cann (Mark), Noel Jr. (Kelly), and Keplar; six grandchildren: Kathryne Bechtler (Brandon), Mark Cann Jr., William Hurley, Betsy Cann, Noel Hurley III, and Anna Hurley; brothers John Jr. (Vera) and Dan Maness; sister Betsy Robinson (Bill); brother and sister-in law Phillip and Brenda Hurley; and multiple nieces and nephews.
Ann was very active in her community, participating in the McDonald Green PTA, volunteering as an election poll worker, serving on the Lancaster County Care Center Advisory Board and participating in the Lancaster County Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, the Lancaster County Beekeepers Association, and was a Master Gardener. She was a Presbyterian Youth leader and Sunday morning nursery worker for many years at Douglas Presbyterian Church. Ann was recognized as the 2018 Lancaster County Beekeeper of the Year, the 2016 Outstanding State Retiree of the S.C. State Employees Association, an Honorary Life Member of the Presbyterian Women, Presbyterian Church and a Providence Presbytery Legacy Award recipient along with her husband.
The Celebration of Life Graveside Service for Ann will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Douglas Presbyterian Church Cemetery officiated by Rev. Rob Jones.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 pm, one hour prior to the service, in the church fellowship hall. Ann asked that any memorials please be made to the Douglas Presbyterian Church Cemetery fund.
The family would like to thank the staff at Lancaster Grove Assisted Living and Visiting Angels for their loving care of Ann. A special thanks also is given to Ann's dear friend, Christine Baker, who visited her daily over the previous 10 years.
