LANCASTER, SC ~ Mrs. Anita Lucille Keener Messer, age 86, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2026 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 30, 1939, in Canton, NC, a daughter of the late Elmer Keener and the late Irene Ward Keener and was the loving wife of Rev. Howard Lee Messer.
Mrs. Messer was a woman of unwavering faith whose life was a beautiful reflection of her love for the Lord, her family, and those around her. As the devoted wife of a pastor for 68 wonderful years, she embraced the calling of being a preacher's wife with grace, humility, and a servant's heart. She faithfully stood beside Rev. Messer throughout his ministry, offering constant love, encouragement, and support while caring for him with deep devotion. She found great joy in serving others and never met a stranger, welcoming everyone with warmth and kindness. Mrs. Messer dearly loved her church and church family, cherishing every opportunity to worship, fellowship, and serve alongside them. Her steadfast faith, compassionate spirit, and genuine love for people touched countless lives, leaving behind a legacy of Christian love, service, and faithfulness that will be treasured for generations to come.
Mrs. Messer is survived by her son, Stephen “Steve” Messer (Vickie); three grandchildren, Kristen Cairnes (Brian), Phillip Messer (Kirsten), and Austin Messer (Taylor); her seven great-grandchildren, Mykaela Blue (Tyler), Mykenzie Brown (Josh), Nathan Cairnes (Skylar), Morgan Williams (Landon), Merit Messer, Noah Messer, and Jaxson Messer; six great great-grandchildren; her sister, Marcia Moran; and many special family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Messer; her parents, Elmer and Irene Kenner; her brother, Gary Keener; a great great-grandchild; and her brother-in-law, Jack Moran.
The family of Mrs. Messer warmly invites relatives and friends to a drop-in Celebration of Life on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Messer, where they will gather to honor her life, share cherished memories, and celebrate the lasting impact she had on all who knew and loved her.
The Graveside Service for Mrs. Messer will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2026 at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens in Canton, NC.
